Competent, personal instruction will never be one-size fits all. It can’t be. No two shooters are ever the same. Goals differ. Skills differ. Personal habits and traits differ. Confidence levels go from one end of the spectrum to the other. Equipment selections vary greatly; some being an asset, some not. And none of these differences have touched on physical issues that may be affecting my student’s shooting.
While instruction may be universal in a few regards . . . much of it isn’t. Effective instruction will always be a unique combination of A) Instructor skills and B) student willingness to adjust to change. A) is defined by competence, including professionalism; knowledge of the game; empathy; integrity; patience and exemplary communication skills. B) can best be summed up by a single word: commitment.
Individuals who are considering enlisting an Instructor to improve their game would be wise to first make a candid, honest evaluation of their own willingness to make changes to their game…followed by some dedicated practice sessions. Second, comes a serious effort to locate and research an Instructor who does not promise you the magic beans…because…despite what he or she may tell you . . . there aren’t any. Skill cannot be bought, it must be earned.
If you are willing to do your part, you have every right to expect your Instructor to do the same. Ask good questions and expect good answers. Answers that make sense. Answers that work . . . consistently . . . dependably. Expect your Instructor to work with you as a person, not just a shooter. That, will create the very essence, the definition of a successful lesson.
Speaking of customer service . . . the sign on the front door of the store said: “Before you ask, the answer is yes. Now . . . tell us what you need.”
That’s been our policy at Paragon from our very first inquiry in 1990!
